Même dans les zones urbaines, les coupures fréquentes et la mauvaise gestion de la chaîne de distribution posent un problème réel de contamination secondaire (Djuikom et al., 2021).

Dans ce contexte, conserver l’eau potable au quotidien dans de bonnes conditions devient un impératif sanitaire pour prévenir de nombreuses maladies hydriques : choléra, typhoïde, hépatite A, diarrhées infantiles, etc.

1. Pourquoi la conservation de l’eau potable est cruciale

L’eau peut être propre au moment de sa production (source, forage, traitement), mais se recontaminer lors du transport ou du stockage. Selon les CDC américains, jusqu’à 70% des contaminations d’eau domestique en zones à faibles ressources surviennent après le point de collecte (CDC, 2022).

Les micro-organismes pathogènes comme Escherichia coli, Giardia lamblia, Salmonella spp., ou encore le Vibrio cholerae peuvent facilement contaminer une eau mal conservée. Ces agents provoquent des pathologies parfois graves, en particulier chez les enfants, les personnes âgées ou immunodéprimées (WHO, 2017).

Même une eau filtrée peut être recontaminée. Il est donc essentiel de :

  • nettoyer les récipients chaque semaine à l’eau de javel diluée (concentration recommandée : 0,1%) ;
  • ne jamais transvaser avec des ustensiles ou des mains non propres ;
  • utiliser des bouchons et robinets pour éviter les contaminations croisées (WHO, 2017).

c) L’environnement de stockage : température, lumière, position

L’eau doit être stockée :

  • à l’abri de la lumière directe, qui favorise la prolifération d’algues et de bactéries ;
  • dans un endroit propre, sec et frais (température ≤ 25°C) ;
  • en hauteur, pour limiter l’accès des enfants, animaux et insectes.

3. Méthodes accessibles de traitement domestique

L’OMS recommande la promotion de l’hygiène de l’eau au niveau communautaire, via :

  • l’éducation à l’hygiène domestique,

  • le suivi microbiologique régulier de l’eau collectée.
